Observations
Date: November 2, 2011
Time: 7:30-11:15

Today is my fifth day observing Mr. Zabel’s classroom. I am starting to get much more comfortable and am starting to learn the kids, and gain relationships with them. Today, I am observing his advisory, his Bio II class and about half of the Bio I class. The day starts in advisory where the students pretty much spend the whole time in front of the fish tank feeding the fish. After about ten minutes of feeding the fish, the students start to get a little rowdy and are fighting over the tank. Mr. Zabel asks the students to sit down and sit around the tables and talk and to leave the fish alone.

The next period starts with Mr. Zabel giving some notes. The class sits attentively and takes notes. After notes, the class splits up into groups to do microscope slide drawings. The drawings go very well. Mr. Zabel walks around the classroom and looks at the students microscopes to make sure that they are seeing the right thing. The students are required to draw what they see and label it. These are handed in at the end of the class for a grade.

The final class that I observed is about 20 minutes of Bio I. The class had a quiz that day so it started with the class asking questions about the material on the quiz. After a brief review, the class starts the quiz and I head home.

Reflection
During this observation I was asked to see how the students played the game of school. In Mr. Zabel’s first class, I could notice that the kids who were not taking notes were staying quiet. They knew that if they were talking, that Mr. Zabel would make them take notes. I also noticed many of the excuses some of the students had for not having their homework. I could tell many of them were lies, but Mr. Zabel still gave them a chance to do their work and hand it in late. It is much more important for the students to do their work and learn material than it would be for them to just not do it. Overall this was a successful visit and I can’t wait to go in next week!
